Los Sn std. (8. Jh.), mhd. lōz n./m., ahd. (h)lōz m./n., as. hlōt Stammwort. Aus g. * hlauti- m. "Losung, Los", auch in gt. hlauts "Los, Anteil, Erbschaft", ae. hlӯt "Los, Schicksal". Die anord. Entsprechung hlaut ist nur relikthaft belegt und offenbar mit einem anderen Wort, das "(Opfer)Blut" bedeutet, zusammengefallen. Es scheint ein Femininum zu sein. Das althochdeutsche/altsächsische Wort ist ein a-Stamm und teilweise Neutrum; das Neutrum hat sich im Deutschen dann durchgesetzt. Los ist eine Ableitung von g. * hleut-a- Vst. "losen" in anord. hljóta "erlangen, zuteil werden, erhalten", ae. hlēotan, as. hliotan "erlosen, erlangen", ahd. liozan. Das Wort hat keine klaren außergermanischen Entsprechungen. Vielleicht gehört es zu lit. kliudýti "anstoßen, treffen, hindern", das ein Intensivum zu lit. kliū́ti "hängenbleiben, anstoßen, hindern" ist und akslav. ključiti sę "passen, zutreffen", aber die Bedeutungsverhältnisse sind nicht ausreichend klar.
